rials and Triumphs: Lives of Women in the Works of Indian Women Artists
By Daily Art

The depiction of women has been essential imagery in the course of Indian art since the ancient era. Associated with fertility, abundance, and prosperity, women were often portrayed in absolute perfection with their ideal physical forms, beautiful faces, as well as the environments they were placed in. This also meant that often the realities and complexities in the lives of women eluded the canvases.
This changed with the arrival of Amrita Sher-Gil, literally and metaphorically. Flashing through the horizon of Indian art like an incandescent shooting star, she single-handedly became a tour de force who put Indian art on the global map. However, her oeuvre, heavily inspired by women around her, became the cornerstone of her art practice.
