PANAJI: A rare painting by Goan artist , ‘Girl in a Yellow Sweater’, was sold to a secret art collector for Rs 14.4 crore at an , while fellow Goan Antonio Xavier Trindade’s painting titled ‘La Source’ fetched Rs 73.2 lakh, setting a world record for the artist’s work.
The two art pieces went under the hammer at the AstaGuru Auction House, which conducted two auctions on April 29-30 and May 2-3, respectively. Souza’s masterpiece was initially valued at Rs 6 crore but it emerged as the highest selling art piece of the auction. Executed in 1957, the work came from the collection of Harold Kovner, a very important patron of Souza. The painting appeared in an auction for the first time. Souza’s ‘Profile Of A Man’ and ‘Flowers’ sold for Rs 5.4 crore and Rs 1.6 crore.
While Souza was a rebellious artist, earning the moniker ‘Enfant Terrible’ of Indian art, Trindade was called the ‘Rembrandt of the East’ for his almost life-like texture and sense of intimacy that he conveyed through his canvas.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the auction results. We have again established new world records for three artists during these auctions. Many of these rare, avant garde works by highly sought-after Indian modernists were appearing in an auction for the first time,” said vice-president at AstaGuru Auction House Sneha Gautam.
The auction also saw paintings of artist M F Husain going on sale. Husain’s work titled ‘Lovers’, reminiscent of a scene from the iconic Indian movie Mughal-e-Azam, sold for Rs 1.9 crore.
The ‘Masters Legacy’ auction sold all the art pieces that went under the hammer, earning Rs 67.73 crore, whereas the ‘Collectors Choice’ auction on May 2-3 pulled in Rs 30.2 crore, said Gautam.
Souza’s art piece ‘Mutation’ went for Rs 2.2 crore.
