Tyeb Mehta-Diagonal and Figure with bird
Tyeb Mehta mandarin of the metaphor leads the auction with ‘Figure With Bird’ 1987 – an important masterpiece given the fact that this was possibly the first instance when the artist incorporated the motif of a bird in his imagery. Deeply personal and politically poignant, it distills complex psychological and metaphysical notions of suffering, violence and trauma with the economy of line, form and colour characteristic of Mehta’s work. Here, the avian and human figure draws perhaps from literary characters like Icarus or Phaethon, and also lays importance to his post Shantiniketan 1983 residency that spawned a new language in an evocative epiphany.
