Gurcharan Singh was born in Patiala, south-eastern Punjab in 1949. He commenced his artistic career at the Government College of Arts & Crafts in Chandigarh in 1973. His artistic themes revolve around ordinary men and women, children and animals which reflect the lives and hardships of the lower strata of society; the invisible and the exploited in India. His palette is colourful and the canvasses large. He has held several exhibitions in New Delhi, Mumbai, Paris and Seoul. His works have also been exhibited at the International Biennale in Tokyo in 1984, at the Contemporary Art Show in Seoul in 1986 along with the Festival of Contemporary Art in London in 1988.
