Akbar Padamsee was born in Bombay in 1928 and initiated his art education at the Sir J.J. School of Art. After completing his education in Bombay, Padamsee went to live and work in France in the year 1951, the following year he was awarded a prize for his painting ‘Blue Bird’ by Andre Breton, on behalf of the Journale d’art. His debut solo show took place at Jehangir Art Gallery, Bombay in 1954. In 1962, Akbar Padamsee was awarded the gold medal by the Lalit Kala Akademi and in 2010, he was awarded the title of Padma Bhushan by the government of India for his contribution towards Fine Art.
Though widely spoken of as a modernist, Akbar Padamsee defied any easy categorization, throughout his illustrious career the artist exuded a fiercely experimental and individualistic trait. Akbar Padamsee passed away in the year 2020 in Mumbai.
