Chintan Upadhyay is one of the leading contemporary artists whose works are radical not only in terms of subject but also in terms of bold experimentation with material, language and medium. Born in 1972 in Rajasthan, he completed his BFA (Painting) in 1995 and later M.F.A. in painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU, Baroda, in 1997. In Baroda, he found that a narrative style of painting was in vogue, as emblematized by Gulam Shaikh and Bhoopain Kulkar. Earlier, growing up in Rajasthan, he was introduced to the miniature paintings tradition. He became versed in the styles of abstract expressionism owing to the influence of his father, himself an art teacher. Chintan Upadhyay has had a number of solo shows in India and internationally at the most prestigious venues, apart from participation in various significant group shows. His creations force viewers to turn inward; they make us to look at ourselves. He often explores the iconography of Pop to convey his subject matter. The artist lives and works in Mumbai.
