about artist

Somnath Hore was born in Barama, Chittagong in 1921 which is present day Bangladesh. His artistic feats began with creating posters for the Communist party when he was a child. This task helped him get admitted to the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata. Wounds and suffering are a central theme for Hore’s works. He has experimented with different mediums from paper to woodcuts and bronze sculptures. In 1954 he became a lecturer at the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship in Kolkata. He was invited in 1958 to set up the first printmaking department at the Delhi Polytechnic. His narratives played with symbols and metaphors though the theme of anguish remained constant through his career. He exhibited widely in India and abroad in England and Jordan. The artist passed away in the year 2006 in Santiniketan, West Bengal.
