about artist

Subhash Awchat is a contemporary artist born in 1950 in Pune. He started off his career as a graphic designer for advertising before leaving it to pursue painting. He is not just a painter but also an author who has written several short stories and books. Writing serves as a reprieve for him when he is struggling with his art. Often Subhash emphasizes on the fact that the subjects of his paintings are inherently Indian in nature and he isn’t influenced by the European style or subjects. Very rarely does he work with a subdued colour palette. He usually uses bright and bold colours that sets his work apart. He is most popular for his Parampoara series of paintings. The everyday life permeates his work and his recent Dharavi series is a clear example of that.

The artist had his first solo exhibition at the Jehangir Art Gallery in 2008. He has also been a part of several groups shows like ‘Faces’, Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai in 2008 and ‘Zip Lines’, Tao Art Gallery, Mumbai in 2009. He also participated in ‘Evolve: 10th Anniversary Show’ at the Tao Gallery in 2010 and again ‘Synergy 2012’ the 12th Anniversary show of Tao Gallery. The artist currently lives and works in Mumbai.
