Sathyanand Mohan was born in 1975 in Kerala. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Painting from the Government College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum in 1998. He then went on to finish a Master’s Degree in Printmaking from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda in 2000. The artist had his first solo show titled ‘Reliquary’ at the Guild Art Gallery, Mumbai in 2009. He had another solo exhibition in 2012 titled ‘Mirage’ at the Guild in Mumbai. He has also been a part of several art fairs like the Singapore Art Fair in 2011, The India Art Summit in 2011 and 2013, the Armory Show in New York in 2009 and KIAF, Seoul, Korea in 2009. Some of his group exhibitions include ‘The Secret Life of Plants’ curated by Maya Kovskaya, Exhibit 320, New Delhi in 2012, ‘Alternate to Another’ The Guild Art, USA Inc, New York in 2010 and ‘Multitudes’, Goethe Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan, Bangalore in 2009. His most recent group exhibition has been ‘The Work of Art: Iteration in Multiples, Fragments and Reflection’, The Guild Art Gallery, Mumbai in 2015. His works always seem to tell a story. There is a feeling that the imagery that he chooses to display is just a small part of the bigger narrative. More recently he has started experimenting with abstract photography. In 2008 he was the recipient of the Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art Research Fellowship for his research titled ‘The Archaeology of Urban Life’. Apart from his artistic practice he has also been writing about art for several years. The artist currently lives and works in Baroda.
