    The heavily decorated tapering bowl with acanthus leaves and grapevines is mounted on a sprawling hexagonal foot. The central knop is studded with red gem stones and acanthus leaves. The base is decorated and engraved with enameled medallions of the St. Mary, St. Joseph and the crucified Christ. The motif of acanthus leaves has been adopted extensively and gives the visual a continuous design flow. Deftly carved grapevines and stalk of wheat which are symbolic and integral to the sacraments of Christianity can be observed as well. The lot has the lozenge mark and hallmark on the bowl and on the foot. The lozenge mark is stamped as L.G, which is made by Louis & Pierre Gille in Lyon, France. The marker’s hallmark is the Head of Minerva. The lot comes along with its original fitted wooden case.

    This multi-tiered Epergne has been crafted with 8 container bowls, with the ascended unit as its highlight.

    The epergne came into existence in France during the early 18th century, in tandem this attractive table centre piece began to be observed in England as well. By the 18th century, hosting guests and ensuring that every aspect of hospitality was impeccable became imperative. There was a marked graduation to finer cutlery that was yearned for by aristocratic estates. Tables were being decorated with acute detailing accentuating development of silver cutlery. The epergne was exactly this, an ornate tiered centerpiece, constructed to bear rare nuts, fruits, condiments and various gourmet fineries from the tropics or the East. Studies show that the epergne first appeared on the English table around the 1720s.
