Bhabesh Sanyal, commonly known as B.C.Sanyal, was born in Assam, in a Bengali family on the 22nd of April, 1902. An artist, sculptor and an art teacher, whose education, began at Serampore College, Bengal. After which he received his Diploma from the Government College of Art and Crafts, Calcutta. He continued teaching at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore after the completion of his graduation. He visited Delhi during the partition, not only did he witness the harsh realities of the partition, but he also depicted its effects through his paintings and sculptures. Between the years of 1953 and 1960 he was a teacher at the Delhi Polytechnic. From 1960 onwards, for a period of eight years, he held the position of Secretary of the Lalit Kala Academi. He was a participant at the Salon de Mai, Paris (1949), the Tokyo International Arts Exhibition (1961) and Wounds, Centre of International Modern Art, Calcutta and National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. He represented India at the Biennales of Venice (1953) and Sao Paulo (1961). His famous paintings include the Flying Scarecrow, Cow Herd, Despair and Way to Peace, which depicts Mahatma Gandhi with a Hindu and a Muslim child. He had an individualistic style that got him noticed around the globe. Sanyal was awarded the Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship for his life time achievements; and was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1984 and was granted the honorary citizenship of Baltimore, USA in 1989. He passed away on the 9th January, 2003.
